Roberto Roizenblatt, MD, PhD, FASRS

Dr. Roberto Roizenblatt is recognized as one of the premier vitreoretinal surgeons in the Los Angeles area. He earned his medical degree from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, the nation's highest-ranked medical institution, where he was raised. Dr. Roizenblatt subsequently completed his medical internship in internal medicine at Jacobi Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Roizenblatt successfully completed two comprehensive three-year ophthalmology residencies: the first at the Federal University of São Paulo and the second at the University of California, Irvine. He then pursued a highly competitive two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Federal University of São Paulo, where he gained extensive experience managing a high volume of complex surgical cases. Following the completion of his PhD, which focused on biometric iris recognition systems, Dr. Roizenblatt conducted two years of postdoctoral research at the prestigious Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California. During this tenure, he served as a member of the research team that developed the world's first FDA-approved retinal prosthesis, an implantable device designed to restore visual function in blind patients.
Dr. Roizenblatt has authored and co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. His surgical expertise encompasses complex vitreoretinal procedures, with particular interests in retinal detachment repair, retinal complications of anterior segment surgery, macular surgery, and diabetic retinopathy management. He currently serves as an expert reviewer for ophthalmology cases at the California Medical Board and as a peer reviewer for the premier journals Ophthalmology Retina and Journal of Vitreoretinal Diseases.
Dr. Roizenblatt holds the distinction of being the first ophthalmologist in the United States to obtain the title of Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology. He previously served on the Education Committee at Los Alamitos Medical Center and held a three-year appointment to the prestigious Credentials Committee of the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is licensed by the Medical Board of California, board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and maintains active participation in the Maintenance of Certification program, which requires ongoing conference attendance and continuous medical knowledge assessment.
Dr. Roizenblatt previously practiced as a medical and surgical retina specialist at DLP Eye Group in Los Angeles and South Coast Retina Center. He has established a distinguished practice in the Long Beach area and currently serves as Chair of Ophthalmology at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, the flagship hospital of the MemorialCare Medical Group.
Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Roizenblatt enjoys spending time with family and friends, is an avid tennis enthusiast, and supports the Los Angeles Lakers.
